In contrast to popular believe, I think a Nigerian wedding can be perfect. All the guest can be served their food, the M.C and d.j can be there on time and everything can almost go 100 percent with the proper planning. Here are few but mighty steps to help make this a reality
START EARLY: Your must start early; most people say at least 6 moths before the time but I feel 1 year before the time is safer (but in a situation were you are loaded financially that 1 moth is enough for you lolz; money answereth all things). Even if you are hiring a wedding planner there are still many things you have to do e.g loose weight (if you want to be a slim bride), get your officiators informed etc. Carry a small diary with you and write down anything that comes to you so you don’t forget
GET A WEDDING PLANNER: A wedding planner will do everything about coordinating your wedding so you can sleep well. All you have to do is give him/her a list of what you want and while he/she does the running around you just follow up with her/him every week. If you cant afford one or haven’t gotten to that stage where the wedding planner comes in, then set up a team of helpers, list out all the things you want done and delegate duties to them. doing the small things first always helps.
INFORM EVERYONE THAT WILL BE PERFORMING A TASK FOR AND BEFORE YOUR WEDDING: The officiator, brides maid, maid of honor, little bride, aso ebi girls, who ever is walking you down the Aile, Chairman, father and mother of the day. Every one that is to do something on that day should be notified at least 6 months early so they can fix it into their time table and everyone that should help you do some running around now should be notified so they can take some burden off you. Instead of do everything on your own, your brides maid will be happy to handle some things for you.
MAKE A BUDGET: Make a list of all the things you want to buy and rent for the wedding, all the people you want to pay and some it up to know how much you’ll be spending. you planner and/or team come into play here as she/he/they will do the running around to cost the things on the list.
CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING VENUE: In Nigeria, your venue is greatly dependent on the season we’re in. If you want an out door wedding then it should be done in the peak of the harmathan. if you want to use a hall then find out the capacity of the hall and compare with the number of guest you are expecting. if the hall is too small… off course you know what happens and if the hall is too big it makes your audience look few so it has to be just right. if you want some of your guest to sleep over them you may want to hire a hall in a hotel complex…….. you deiced.
YOU CAN HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER TWO MONTHS TO THE WEDDING: To save on expenses, instead of getting a planner from the beginning, you can simply get your team to handle the initial running around and costing of everything then hand them over to a good planner to put the finishing touches.
GIVE YOUR DJ THE LIST OF SONGS YOU WANT HIM TO PLAY FOR YOU BEFORE YOUR WEDDING: If you don’t have any song in particular you want to hear on your wedding day, its okay but if you do then your DJ should get hold of them. If you want him to play just gospel or even akanchwa then he should be aware also.
PACK UP A FIRST AID WEDDING EMERGENCY KIT: This is a kit every bride must have to cover up uncertainties. it should comprise of:
– a white powder (to cover any spill on your gown)
– make up kit i.e comb, small mirror, everything
– breath mint
– rubber band to adjust your hair
– hair dryer just incase of rain
– razors and shaving sticks for when some of your bridesmaids did not shave their eyebrows or armpits
– flat shoes
– sewing kit and pins
– drinking straw
– and even a pressing iron
Do the little things first so you don’t forget to do them eventually.
Make sure you have a checklist that you and your team or planner are working by.
Make a list of of every expense made and make sure you keep to your budget
It’s one thing to get married its another to stay married so of all your planning the most important is to pick out the right groom.
