So I received this mail recently and I would want to share this for the benefit of those who also have questions like this.
Hi Serena my name is Onome and I am a big fan of your blog. I love the way you write and also your tips on pageants. I’ve been reading your pageant tips and I’ve always wanted to contest for a beauty pageant. I’ve made up my mind to go ahead and contest but I’m confused, most people are telling me to go for a small pageant since all in this big pageants already know their winner. Please advice me what do I do?
Hello Onome thank you for your kind words and visiting us regularly. The thing about pageantry in Nigeria is that sadly most times it isn’t free and fair no matter the size of pageant you decide to go for. So personally I would prefer you go for the big pageants.
The reason is this Lets assume you don’t become the winner (since the winner was arranged) you might not leave empty handed. Different agencies work with big pageants and if you were truly good (esp during camp) they will spot you and make you a brand ambassador. Modelling agencies, hair companies, makeup lines can take you up and you will have some exposure from there.
Your camp choreographer or instructor who saw your efforts and felt you should have won might even give you some connections.
Then again in most big pageants even if the winner was arranged, the first and second runner up may be genuine and being a first or 2nd runner up for a big pageantry organization may still give you more chances to thrive than even being the winner of a small pageant.
for instance look up Queen Celestine who was the 1st runner up at MBGN 2015, she did not win the title of MBGN WORLD on that day but personally I believe she became more popular than the winner that year. She went ahead to win Miss Congeniality (I don’t know if you know how important Miss Congeniality is, most people say its the most important award )at Miss Universe 2015 and became the brand ambassador for Slot Nigeria. She may not have won the car but I’m Sure she made enough money to buy herself a new car.
Okay Let us assume that even the 2nd runner up was arranged as well. There might be other positions available that will give you a platform (no matter how little) to thrive
Still using MBGN as an Example; back then the pageant use to have Miss Lacacera, MBGN Model etc
Miss Lacasera was chosen from the top ten, given 500,000 Naira and a Kia Picanto
Sometimes the winners are not arranged. Yes o. There are some years when maybe nobody had the money to buy the crown (yes the crown can be bought) and the organizers might decide to have free and fair. This applies to other big and small pageants
I would have recommended some pageants for you but my dear, the industry is such that a pageantry which has been genuine before might decide to change its ways a particular year and vice versa.
Nonetheless If you still want to try a small pageant first to get the feel of contesting that’s great as well.
If you still want to ask more questions just watapp or mail me okay? hope this was of help to you.
